MSN Windows Messenger is the Microsoft instant messaging program built into Windows XP. Microsoft has integrated this program with every XP product. Microsoft has integrated this program into many of its other programs, including Outlook Express, Outlook and Remote Assistance. However, you can simply disable the messenger or completely remove it from PC. This messenger gets very irritating when you don’t use it, and it keeps on popping on every system boot.
Follow the below procedure to Remove or Disable the Messenger…
To Disable Window Messenger
- Windows Messenger 4.0 or Later on a Windows XP Professional
Step 1: Click Start –> click Run, type gpedit.msc and press ENTER.
Step 2: Go to Local Computer Policy –> Computer Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Windows Components –> Windows Messenger.
Step 3: Now Double-click on the option “Do not allow Windows Messenger to run”, and then click Enabled.
Step 4: Click OK, and then close the window.
- Windows Messenger 4.0 on a Windows XP Home Edition
Step 1: Start Windows Messenger.
Step 2: Click Options on the Tools menu.
Step 3: Click the Preferences tab, click to clear the “Run this program when Windows starts” check box, and then click OK.
Note: If you are using msn 4.5 or higher. For Messenger 4.5 or higher may need to do some registry trick. I have not tested for 4.5 or higher version yet. So You can refer to the below site to disable Msn messenger for 4.5 or higher.
To Remove or Uninstall Messenger
Follow the below procedure to remove Windows Messenger, depends on whether your system has Windows XP Service Pack 1 installed.
To check if you are using service pack1.
—> Simply open System Properties Press Window Key + Pause Break.
- Removing Messenger from computers without Service Pack 1 installed
Step 1: Click on Start –> Run
Step 2: Copy the below line into run command.
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Step 3: Click on OK.
Well, I’m Using Windows XP Service pack 3 and the above Run command worked for me.
- Removing Messenger from computers with Service Pack 1 installed
Step 1: Click on Start –> Control Panel.
Step 2: Double click on Add or Remove Programs.
Step 3: Select Add/Remove Windows Components.
Step 4: Uncheck (Remove Tick) from Windows Messenger.
Note: Do Not Uncheck other components.Or you may uninstall other components too.
Step 5: Click Next.
Step 6: Click Finish And Done.
Step 7: Restart your computer.
